Sure, we all want to be amongst the big hitters. And if you’re like most, you’re wondering why the smallest guy in your foursome is able to out-drive the rest of the group. What’s his (or her) secret?
There may be some various reasons for the lack of distance – from equipment to technique, anxiety to mechanics. What is obvious in many cases for an Egoscue practitioner like myself (who looks at biomechanics related to posture and function) – are the postural deviations and how they can give us some clues as to how much or how little a golfer will be able to manufacture the necessary force to maximize distance.

Sway during backswing. Check out more at MyTPI.com

Something as simple as an elevated backside hip may tip us off to the inability to load and stabilize (and thus transfer energy) from the back leg through the body to produce a decent downswing motion. Reverse spine angle, hip sway, early extension, and many other swing faults may be prevented by having a functional body to bring to the course.

The elevated hip is a correctable postural deviation in almost all cases. Of course, that also means that the swing faults can then be dealt with between you and your pro, which also means more of a “natural swing” that doesn’t have to be tweaked and re-tweaked in a fight against your postural dysfunction. Prevent or stop pain symptoms during your swing by correcting underlying faults such as this by taking a more functional body onto the course.

What swing faults are you working on?

Susan (not her real name) came to us with left foot pain. She had tried all kinds of things to make it better, including physical therapy, chiropractic, stretching, acupuncture, and drugs. Nothing worked and it was hurting more than ever. One of the things I l … Read More

What type of life do you expect to live as you get older? Do you picture yourself active & playing sports like golf, socializing with friends, and enjoying family and friends? Or do you picture yourself stuck in a wheelchair, isolated and dependent on others? I don't think any of us think we'll be stuck in the position of dependency or at least hope we won't. The key then is to direct our path now in the choices we make so that our destination is an enjoyable one.

Tips for Healthy Aging (continued from August newsletter)
1. Build Awareness.

Take some time to recognize your habits and where you are currently. It’s only if we know where we are now that we can make changes as needed. If you’ve known that you need to change some bad habits in your life and have been putting them off, identify how long it’s been. It’s amazing when talking to people how they let YEARS go by without even knowing how long it’s been. Start a journal and write down a few things about your days, including things like:

what you’re eating (and how much),

how much you move/exercise, how you spend your time (watching TV alone or socializing, feeding your mind or gelling?),

what your moods are throughout the day & why (Did something cause your mood to be up or down, happy or sad? Maybe your reaction to a certain stimulus?)

2. Make Decisions for a Better You.

Only you can change your habits. Others can help you short term, but ultimately you’re in charge. In building your awareness, it may benefit you to identify a time each day that you can use to become more aware of things such as healthy eating habits or the best types of workouts for your goals, for example.

The critical point is to make decisions and stick to them. Many times, we don’t make the WHY we do something important enough to stick to the decision. We get stuck in HOW we’re going to do it and the process of making it happen so much that we don’t make it a priority. (Making something part of a “To-do” list isn’t enough.) Make sure that you put your health as a priority. You are worth it! Create time in your every day for you, or you may find that the very people you’re spending time worrying about and helping are now having to take care of you.

3. Know the Facts about Taking Care of Yourself.

A) You are in charge of your health. Your doctor does not put food in your mouth or brush your teeth for you, and it’s ultimately up to you to take actions that improve your health. Listen to your body (again, be aware) and trust your intuition.

B) You are what you eat. It’s an old adage that is as true today as back when you first heard it. Today’s food choices are not what they used to be. We all need to be smarter about avoiding pesticides & additives by choosing organic & eating more whole foods (i.e. fruits, veggies, etc) while avoiding processed foods. Non-fat and low-fat really don’t mean anything if it’s full of sugar or artificial ingredients. (*Plus, there are good fats vs. bad fats. Oils such as olive and flax are full of good while anything fried is not going to be good for you.) The old food pyramid is gone – which means breads, grains and such are no longer the base. Again, more whole foods that are water-rich and in their natural form.

Hydrate early & often. I know people always complain about having to go to the bathroom more often, but it is crucial to put water into your body to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your cells. The current recommendation for water per day is 1/2 your body weight in pounds, converted to ounces. So, if you weigh 150 pounds – 150/2 is 75 ounces.

C) Exercise is King.

For as many ailments out there, the wonder-drug that costs nothing and is readily available to all is exercise. Exercise has been linked to reductions and/or delays in the top causes of death in the U.S. including heart disease, cancer, stroke and respiratory disease. Add to this list diabetes and Alzheimer’s and the only top seven cause not included is accidents (so be aware as you’re out there exercising). Plus, on top of avoiding these causes of death, you’ll be fostering a healthier cardiovascular system, a healthier and more active brain, better digestion, better immune function, stronger bones & muscles, and better balance & coordination. Again, all for free and without need for a prescription!

Types of exercise should include aerobic and balance/coordination & strengthening.

D) Take Care of Your Mental Health.

Not only will the foods you eat and the exercise you engage in help your mind function better, but so will the company you keep and the activities that engage your mind. Joining social clubs or activities that include interaction can do wonders for your mood and overall health. Find activities that stimulate your mind and that keep you learning.

Choose your moods also. By remembering that you are in charge of how you feel, you can choose to put on a smile and be happy or choose otherwise. But if you’re going to be social, a smile goes a long way.

While this may not be your typical list of do’s & dont’s, compiled here are some major topics that are universal to all. Remember that it all starts with your mindset and making the choice to live a healthy life. Picture yourself as the active, healthy, vibrant person you can be when you reach 100 years and up. It all starts with your habits today, and if those habits are already leading to less energy, low moods, and negative patterns — it’s time now to start changing. It doesn’t matter where you start from this list, as long as you establish and make clear your decision to be a better you.

We’re here to help and/or can point you in the right direction. And we plan to be around for a long time too, so let’s get on track together!

Wow! What a depressing article in the LA Times… speaks to how confused some in healthcare are with the curing of chronic pain. They won’t even talk about “cure”??

Dumbfounded by the part at the end where they say “patients cry when you believe them”. And this, unfortunately, is where many are in conventional “pain relief” medical centers — just getting to a point of believing the patient. Sad.

http://www.latimes.com/news/health/la-he-pain-brain-20100705,0,7483659.story?page=1&track=rss

Don’t put up with it. Do your homework. Find someone who:

not only believes you, but who knows that the human body is capable of healing

will listen to you regarding your condition and not dismiss as trivial

puts you in the driver’s seat of your health by encouraging you to listen to your body’s signals and makes you an active participant in the process

will answer your questions as to why the pain is there and what needs to happen in order for it to go away

The pain signals mentioned in the article are sent because pain killers and meds DO NOT correct the problem, they simply try to mask it. And so it is that the body will do what it’s being asked to do until the stimulus for rewiring (creating new nerve pathways) is interrupted and restored to proper design.

Planning to get out for the Fourth? There are always things to remember for the get-togethers, the local fair, BBQs and for travel. Things to remember might include the sunscreen, the napkins, pick up Aunt Mary, stop by the store, and oh, don’t forget all of the kids… (my parents forgot my brother at the fair!)

And, of course, don’t forget to take care of your body. If you’re going to be jumping on the volleyball court, playing a little softball, smashball or soccer (like the guys in the World Cup), then hopefully you’ve been doing your menus and staying on track.
If not, then get these quick “warm-up” e-cises in before you jump into activity. It’ll only take you 10-12 minutes but could help reduce your risk of injury.

Click the link below for some easy-to-follow exercises:

If you saw the movie Avatar, then you know also saw how the world was a virtual playground - full of activity, fun and excitement. Here are some tips on training your avatar.

Can you remember a time when it was FUN to feel your body free?

Whether you were running, skipping, climbing, playing sports or just goofing off, there’s nothing like the stimulation of muscles, pumping of blood, firing of millions of nerves and rush of adrenaline.

In the movie Avatar (and I can’t believe it’s coming out on DVD already!), the main character’s “mind” is put into a body of a 9-foot alien with which he must learn how to balance standing, running, jumping, climbing, etc. The moment his mind melds with the avatar body, he gets his legs underneath him, heads outside and starts running. It’s not that remarkable except for the fact that the main character’s real legs are paralyzed and he hasn’t been able to run for many years. So given the opportunity, he seized it and ran at top speed as far as he could go.

Tip #1: Embrace your avatar under your nose. Find a park, beach, playground or trail to enjoy being in your body. Try skipping, hopping, jumping, running, climbing, etc. to get a feel for all the physical abilities of your avatar.

Do you still enjoy physical play?
I put a quote from Pete Egoscue on the bottom of my emails as a reminder, “We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” As we’ve become so used to structured, scientifically-proven techniques and strategies, we sometimes forget that playing IS working out. Playing freeze tag, capture the flag, kick the can, hula hooping, skipping rope… all fun ways to enjoy a day and have some fun. I know too many people nowadays that don’t have enough energy to have fun, but muster up the energy to hit the gym early in the morning for a grinding spin class. I’m not trying to knock the gym or taking classes, but vary it up and check the “fun-meter” while your doing it. Are you exercising for your heart & lungs, or for your mental health? It can be all of the above.

Tip #2: Your avatar has many physical functions. You will wear out parts by repeating rote patterns consistently. However, you will replenish your avatar’s health and vitality through varied motion and playful activities. Remember, your mind is now connected to your avatar’s physiology, so make sure your avatar is having fun!

Are you paying attention to or blocking out feedback?
Your body has a way of telling you it’s time to stop. It’s called fatigue. Muscles deplete their glycogen stores or can’t convert fat over to glucose fast enough, and the muscles tell you “no more.” This idea of fatigue, however, seems somewhat old-fashioned these days as the stop signal for most is pain. And whether joint pain or muscle strain, many are not reaching the point of normal physiological function but instead reaching biomechanical thresholds. It’s like doing a stress-test for ligamentous and tendinous strength instead of using the muscles and joints according to their proper function. And, unfortunately, if the muscles and ligaments pass the stress-test with musculoskeletal dysfunction, the joints will feel the effects down the road (hence arthritis, degenerative joint disease and the like).

Tip #3: Prevent overuse injuries and system breakdowns by preparing your avatar’s body for proper movement. Do this by getting in balance and by engaging in a variety of activities so that they are fun (vs. monotonous & repetitive), invigorating (vs. tiring, wearing), and give a sense of connected presence (vs. get me out of this body). HINT: If you look down and see your avatar’s feet pointing outward or catch a glimpse of the sideview with the head forward, these are signs that he/she is experiencing dysfunction and needs more variety of activity.

Having fun yet?
Here’s where it gets a little dicey. Some people have lost the connection of fun and physical. Even worse, some never had it. To some, these words are mutually exclusive and should not be mentioned in the same sentence. But yes, once upon a time, before 300-plus channels on TV, before 24-7 interaction on cell phones and Twitter accounts, and before digitally created physical activity on the Wii — there was physical play that equaled fun. It was fun to walk home from school and make up games along the way. It was fun to cut across the school yard and climb or slide under the fences. It was fun to have “free” days where there was no structure and we had to come up with games at the park.

Tip #4: Locate other avatars. Identify those interested in having fun while physically active. Enjoy logging hours of training by playing and enjoying games. Remember, this is all a simulation, make the most of it and take good care of your avatar body by treating it with a variety of movements, exercises and physical endeavors. And by all means, have fun!
